Aaron Sorkin writes and directs Jessica Chastain in the movie Molly’s Game. Out now.

Molly’s Game is the true story of Poker Princess Molly Bloom, a former Olympic skier who ran the world’s high-stakes poker game for over ten years. Some of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world took part until she was arrested by the FBI in the middle of the night after getting in trouble with the law. It’s up to her lawyer Charles Jaffey (played by Idris Elba) to help her from getting a five-year stint in prison.

Aaron Sorkin, mastermind writer behind the hits Moneyball, A Few Good Men, The American President, Steve Jobs and the ever-famous The Social Network also penned Molly’s Game and did so smartly. This is also his directorial debut.

The movie is a triumph. Jessica Chastain awes with a stellar, gutsy, powerhouse performance. Idris Elba captivates as her lawyer, in one scene with a lengthy monologue where you can’t pull your eyes off of him.

The stakes aren’t the highest, right off the bat you know what Molly is facing, what she wants, but is unwilling to do, however, watching it unfold and what she’ll do to maintain her integrity keeps you transfixed. Sorkin’s witty, fast paced dialogue is ever present. Even if one doesn’t understand or know the game it doesn’t matter. Sorkin won’t dumb down his scripts for his audience, and even if he did, it wouldn’t sound like he did.

One scene between Molly and her father (played by Kevin Costner) seemed unfitting, as though it didn’t belong there. However, by the end of said scene you find yourself feeling compassion for Molly and her reasons why. Though critics may harp on this, I find it brings a realness to the character, helping the audience to relate to this strong woman. You find yourself rooting for her, wanting her to succeed in her endeavor.

This movie made me want to know more. Where’s Molly Bloom now? What’s she doing? Will she be at the Academy Awards this year when Chastain is nominated?

Intriguing, dynamic, and highly entertaining, Molly’s Game is a win!
