How To: Making Display Cupcakes

by | 0 comments

I love having my cake stand on my kitchen counter filled with yummy treats.  But to be honest, I don’t want to always be baking those items. So I wanted to find a way to have the look with out risking my waist line.

This is easier than you think and I am so in love with how they came out!

What You Need

1. Cupcake Pan

2. Cupcake Liners

3. Daptex (shown here)

4. Lightweight Spackle (shown here)

5. Sandwich Baggie or Piping Bag

6. Piping Bag Tip

7. Glitter (optional)

The Base

I started by covering my cupcake pan with cling wrap. This is optional, but I just wanted to take the extra step in case I spilled.

Once you have everything set up with your liners in the pan, make sure they’re pushed down, add your Daptex. This step doesn’t have to be perfect, I just try to put enough to be about level with the top of the liner.

The pan is so that the cupcake liners keep their shape as they dry, so make sure to leave them in it. I let mine dry about a couple of days.

As you check on them you will notice that the top will be good to go but the bottom takes longer. While the bottom is still soft I like to take them out of the pan, after about a day, and place them on the counter to make sure the bottom is flat. Sometimes I have to lightly push them on the counter to flatten it out.

Time For The Icing

Once your base is all the way dry it’s time to decorate!

The lightweight spackle makes the perfect icing. This is where you get creative. Pick out your favorite icing tip, I used tip 2D, and an icing bag. If you don’t have an icing bag a sandwich baggie works just the same.  Just cut the corner off the baggie and insert your icing tip.

Finishing Touches

If you want to add a little extra you can use glitter as sprinkles. This is another place where you can be creative. Just remember what ever you decide to top your cupcakes with you need to do so before your “icing” dries.

I just love the little sparkle that the glitter gives to them!

Once the “icing” is totally dry it’s time to put them on display!

I have made two batches of cupcakes from just the one can of Daptex and container of spackle.  So you can make different cupcakes for different seasons, just use different cupcake liners.

I did red/black buffalo check liners for Christmas/Valentine’s Day. Then I made them with red liners for the rest of the year.

I hope this has inspired you!

Happy decorating!
